Pros
  • Productivity tracking features.
  • Large range of supported integrations (100+ integrations)
  • Available on all platforms (web, desktop, mobile)
Cons
  • Mobile app gets laggy sometimes
  • Can be pricey for larger teams. The product’s premium plan is about $10 more than the least expensive product on this list. The per user per month pricing basis does’t help either. A team of 50 users should expect to pay about $1,000 a month for using this product.

Toggl Track Review

Formerly Toggl, Toggl Track is one of the most popular time tracking softwares in the market. They earned their spot as a top choice for freelancers and small businesses due to the application's simplistic UI and productivity-centered features, some of which you get for free.

An example of a productivity tool Toggl Track offers is their pomodoro timer. With the pomodoro timer, you can set Toggl Track to send break reminders at intervals depending on how frequently you want the reminders. This tool takes advantage of the pomodoro technique which has been shown to be an effective time management tool.

Toggl Track also gives you the flexibility to sort, filter and create your reports based on number of billable and non-billable hours, projects worked on, clients worked for, tasks completed, and teams that participated in individual projects and tasks. These reports can be exported via CSV or PDF and sent to your clients or boss. You can also schedule your reports to regularly send to anyone you want, at any interval you like i.e daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

The idea behind Toggl Track is that what’s good for the team members should be good for the administrator or project manager and vice versa. With its project management features, Toggl Track gives managers the assigned billable rates— either by workspace, team member, or project— to see tasks and activities that are generating revenue. In addition, managers can set project time estimates. That being said, these features are only available from the Starter Plan.

You can see our pricing section for a more detailed breakdown, but here’s a quick summary of how Toggl is priced:

Toggl Track's free plan encompasses most of their productivity features, report features, and time tracking features. But if you want a little more than that (especially project tracking and team scheduling features) then you will have to pay for the other three paid pricing plans - Starter, which costs $9 per user per month, Premium, which costs $18 per user per month, and Enterprise, which is a custom pricing plan.

One thing you should be aware of with Toggl Track is that it does not have an invoicing or payroll feature. You can only export your time tracking data to a third-party accounting software of your choice. Third-party integration might not be a problem with their 100+ supported apps. h

However, you will definitely incur additional costs if you want to process your payroll.

Lastly, Toggl offers two additional products besides its time tracking software. Their resource planning and project management solution - Toggl Plan - helps managers build visual roadmaps and project schedules, allocate resources to tasks/projects, assign work, and collaborate on tasks. The second software is a recruitment and talent management software called Toggl Hire.

Toggl Track Customer Success

About Toggl Track

Toggl was founded by Alari Aho and Krister Haav in Estonia on June 16, 2006. Alari, a software engineer, started Toggl as a side business to his consultancy agency he founded earlier in the decade with his brother.

According to Alari, Toggl was not deliberately planned. They built the software (which was just an in-house widget at the time) to bill their clients from the consultancy business. The global success of the Estonian company, Skype, prompted the founders to do more with the time tracking widget and so they got to work. Three months later in August of 2006, they officially launched the software.

Toggl continued as a side gig for the brothers until 2008 when they decided to focus all their energy and resources on the product. Interestingly, Toggl never raised money from investors in its early days. It was fully bootstrapped by the savings from their consultancy job.

In 2020, Toggl rebranded to Toggl Track when it merged with Teamweek (a team planning tool) and Hundred5 (a hiring tool). These tools were initially released by Toggl as separate products in 2011 and 2013 respectively. Since the merger, Teamweek is now referred to as Toggl Plan, and Hundred5 and Toggl Hire.

Toggl has grown from a simple time tracking software that serviced 3,500 signees in 2006 to over 6 million users across 120 countries as of Summer 2022.
