I use Monday to manage talent acquisition and talent relations. Monday makes it easy for business groups to work together regardless of where an individual might be located. This is especially important when a project crosses multiple departments - for example, a salesperson can work with IT to better determine the likelihood of success on a particular project and work with accounting to better develop pricing. Monday also makes it very easy to take a close look at an employee’s performance, KPIs, and other metrics. For an HR person, this functionality is vital to ensure that training is effective, that talent acquisition is on-point, and that compensation and evaluations are more effective. Monday is essential to building an effective corporate culture.

Monday is highly visual, which makes it easy to use. The dashboards are intuitive, which, again, shortens the time to ramp up and become productive. Monday is also incredibly flexible. I use it for talent acquisition and management, but it’s also very effective in sales development and project management.
As an HR Consultant, I’ve found Monday to be very helpful in addressing a variety of issues. For example, I’m able to collaborate with different teams on talent acquisition and talent management. I recommend Monday to my customers, and the complaint that they commonly have is that the pricing is confusing. Also, the trial day is only fourteen days when the industry standard is thirty - that alone turn some customers off. Finally, time tracking is only available on pro accounts.

Zoho is a software company that makes everything from CRM to bookkeeping tools. The platform also offers a cloud-based HRMS that’s bound to check most boxes in any HR manager’s requirement list.
To test the product, we signed up for Zoho free plan and found that, while it has some limitations, it provides a strong set of basic features that are good for small business.
There is a five-user cap on the free plan (including one administrator), and storage is limited to 250MB. It includes basic HR functions like leave management and also some more exotic features like an AI chatbot.
“Zia” the chatbot, is a unique feature that helps employees find solutions to HR questions without requiring one-on-one help from an HR rep.
Employees simply ask a question, and the bot uses keywords to search the existing FAQs. If there are no matches, Zia automatically creates a new case that will be handled by an HR rep, and the database of FAQs grows.
Though the free plan features are basic, many users comment on the convenience of having multiple aspects of employee data available in one place. The mobile apps are also well-liked overall but are reported to lag occasionally.
However, 250MB of storage can be a deal-breaker for some teams. Additionally, customers on the free plan do not have access to 24/7 customer support, though they are offered support during normal business hours.

Looking at Homebase’s recent product releases, the platform has moved toward more guided, semi-automated HR operations for hourly teams. Particularly, the company has rolled out an AI Hiring Assistant that can generate job descriptions, screen candidates through AI-led interviews, and pre-schedule interviews with top applicants. On the operations side, a Scheduling Assistant now builds and optimizes schedules automatically based on availability, work history, and time-off data, with conflict resolution handled in a few clicks.

I used the software every day. Everyone initially had to log in via a portal, but that didn't work well due to how my users had to log in and out. I switched the company to the app and utilized their geofencing, which worked beautifully.
The owner was very meticulous and spent a lot of time checking clock-in locations for all staff, including remote employees. The geofencing was extremely flexible by location. My team caught on to the app quickly and even showed me features.
It is a high-quality app for employees to use. We did have trouble with the initial setup due to labor laws in different states. Their help team walked us through the fix in no time. The issue was over employee breaks, paid or not. Our solution was to turn that feature off and have the employees take their breaks without clocking in or out.
Sending approved hours into payroll was also a simple process. Once the managers approved the hours, I logged into the payroll system and directed a download.
The app for admins and employees is so well done that they hardly needed any instruction. Scheduling can be tricky for a new user, but once it's set up, changes are simple, and deploying the schedule is a breeze. The connection to payroll was very straightforward and always correct once the hours were approved and downloaded into payroll. Employees knew exactly what was happening and could immediately get a correction in place prior to the payroll download if they made an error.
I was working for a manufacturing company. The warehouse workers were not tracking their time properly when I came on board. They needed a solid solution quickly. To solve this problem, I looked towards the payroll company. I was seeking an app that connected directly to my payroll, provided complete accuracy, and allowed employees to know exactly where they stood at any given time.
Homebase connected beautifully to Gusto, one of their partners. Homebase has a scheduling feature that is very easy to use, allowing easy distribution of new schedules, changes, updates, etc., to employees. I installed this system in a hotel, and the staff loved it. The manager was computer illiterate and struggled a lot with the scheduling feature.
Suggestion: Ensure your manager goes through the Homebase training if they are unfamiliar with timekeeping/scheduling systems. Their help is available most of the time via live chat, and both admins and employees can use it.
I used Homebase for two years. I stopped because of their growing pains, as too many issues popped up. However, when I used it for the hotel, those issues had been resolved.
When they were growing rapidly, getting help could take time. During this time, the transmission of hours into payroll wasn't always working properly, which made the software unacceptable for us. That has since been fixed, as it worked fine for the hotel I put onto the system. The scheduling portion can be cumbersome for a person who is a novice. Ensure users who are doing the scheduling receive training if they're new to timekeeping software.
It's very similar to other timekeeping applications I've experienced. I prefer Homebase over most due to its simplicity and how much the employees liked the app.
Initially, ensure this timekeeping system integrates with your payroll provider, which is the most important. Determine if your employees will use their own cell phones or if you want to have a login portal. The best system for me was biometric, but adding that piece can be expensive. Employees did not mind having the app on their phone; they actually loved the feeling of control Homebase gave them. If you're seeking software that will help with scheduling your team, this one does well.
From the time I used it, they had many growing pains, including internal staffing changes and getting them up to speed. That's been resolved as far as I can tell from the hotel. This is a really good application for employees and employers.

We use BambooHR to track employee evaluations, reviews, expired credentials, birthday and anniversary messages. It supports both mass and individual email communications. We use it to log notes, promotions, and track pay increases or status changes.
The system helps us run various reports, especially during hurricane season. We also categorize departments based on reporting structures or shift assignments.

Reports can be customized to fit specific needs. BambooHR shows when candidates or employees have viewed emails, which is helpful when they claim otherwise. It provides tracking for performance reviews.
The company I have a contract with did not have an ATS and was using Excel, which is outdated for tracking and consolidating information. I was tasked with researching and finding a solution that would work for a small company and fit our budget and needs.
I implemented BambooHR with the representative and have been using it for over four years. The primary reason we needed it was to track all candidates and create historical data, which is also required by law. The pricing works for us—BambooHR meets our needs on a small scale. We operate two different companies and were not able to nest them under the same system, even though they are similar.
Add-ons are billed separately. After implementation, someone within the company needs to become the expert on the system. The implementation period was quick and somewhat rushed.
They have added new features that are either free or included in the selected package, which is a plus. They also offer many tutorials and a self-help support page.
BambooHR is a good fit for small businesses that do not require extensive customization or frequent large-scale changes.
BambooHR may not suit very large enterprises with multiple users or businesses under one system.

Bitrix24

Bitrix24 is a hugely popular vendor with a massive array of tools for businesses and organizations. Some of their HR products are free, and for the same plan you can get several other business apps too.
PROS
- Messaging, tasks, video, docs, and CRM are all in one place.
- Auto-delete, polls, and AI assistant (CoPilot) enhance team comms.
- Dedicated zones to work with external partners or across departments.
- Quick task creation, Gantt/Kanban views, and workload tracking.
- Real-time co-editing, version control, and role-based access.
CONS
- Despite redesign, the dashboard can still feel crowded and overwhelming for new users.
- Bugs have been reported by some users.
- Configuring workflows and settings can be time-consuming.
- Many permissions are limited to super admins, reducing flexibility.

While not solely HR-focused, Bitrix24 is used by more than 8,000,000 organizations all over the world. Nevertheless, the free plan also adds countless other features from the other Bitrix products. While more of a collaboration SaaS platform with a massive variety of tools like CRM, project management, and even a website builder, Bitrix24 also offers a highly reliable and intuitive HR information system. As of 2021, it includes over 25 HR tools. From those, several such as company structure, employee directory, and company knowledge base are included in the free version for unlimited users.
Saigon Newport Corporation, Properters, Endelza International
Bitrix24’s free HR software is available on its website and provides users with 5GB of storage and unlimited seats. There are also 4 paid plans ranging from $49 to $399 per month for those interested.
Best For
Teams that need HR functions alongside a broader set of business tools — CRM, project management, document collaboration, and internal messaging — and want all of it under one free plan without stitching together multiple vendors.
I use Bitrix multiple times a week. Some of the key workflows I use it for include:
- Manage projects. We are able to create projects and assign them, set deadlines and be able to track the progress.
- Instant communication. It has various messaging tools such as video calls, instant messaging, and group chats so one can be able to see and respond to them quickly and at everyone's convenience.
- The document-sharing feature enables members to share various documents as well as being able to work on a single document with multiple team members simultaneously. This is by far the best feature for me!
- Customer Relationship Management (CRM) has made marketing processes easier and led to better customer relationships.

- Better communication through instant messaging, group chats, and video calls. One is in the loop of whatever is going on and gets updates quickly.
- Document sharing option. Every member can share a document, and other members can work on the same document simultaneously.
- Better collaboration. This can mainly be attributed to enhanced communication.
My company was mainly trying to solve issues in relation to collaboration and communication. This has led to increased productivity and improved efficiency. We are able to share documents and properly manage our projects better than before. The tools being offered have streamlined our operations a great deal. I have been using Bitrix for 1.5 years now.
- It can be a bit expensive compared to other similar tools out there. Having regular discounts would go a long way.
- Someone who's not familiar with it will have a really hard time navigating through it. A short introductory video of how it works would really help.
- Technical support varies with the different plans available, and this may cause agitation since the responses they are getting aren't necessarily the ones they're hoping for. I feel like the support should be the same regardless of the package one is using.
It has an inclusive tool where one can do product management, CRM and communication. This means that my organization wouldn't have to use different software to achieve the same results.
Pricing. Because there are different plans, one needs to be sure they get a plan that's within their budget.
Ease of use. One needs to make sure that learning how to use it wouldn't be a problem for its members and they'll navigate easily.
I can confidently say that the enhanced features have improved communication and productivity for its members.

Other Free HR Software Worth Considering
These tools didn't make our featured list. Still, each has a legitimate use case, and depending on your situation, one of them might be exactly what you need.
Odoo: For teams that only need one HR function
Rather than offering a bundled free plan, Odoo makes each of its applications free to use individually, for unlimited users, indefinitely. You only start paying once you add a second application. This makes it appealing if you have one specific HR gap to fill rather than a broad set of needs.
The tradeoff is that as soon as you need two or more modules together, costs can add up quickly, and the interface requires some configuration time before it feels intuitive.
Paid options: Paid plans range from $7.25 to $10.90 per user per month and bundle HR with CRM, sales, and project management.
Best for: Companies with a single, well-defined HR use case, such as standalone leave tracking or payroll, that don't want to pay for a full suite.
OrangeHRM: For organizations with technical resources
OrangeHRM is one of the most established names in open-source HR software, with a track record that includes universities, nonprofits, and global brands like Duke University and Red Hat. The free Starter edition covers core HR functions but notably excludes payroll integrations and onboarding workflows.
The catch with open-source is that you're responsible for hosting and maintaining your own servers, which means you'll need some in-house technical capacity. For organizations that have it, the payoff is full control over data and significant customization potential.
Paid options: A paid Advanced plan with a 30-day trial is also available for teams that want richer features and support without the self-hosting overhead.
Best for: Nonprofits or mission-driven organizations with IT support on hand that want data control and a free, customizable system.
Sentrifugo: For SMBs comfortable with self-hosting
Like OrangeHRM, Sentrifugo is another fully open-source and free to use. Where it distinguishes itself is in the breadth of functionality it offers out of the box for small and medium businesses: it covers everything from appraisals and leave management to asset management and interview scheduling. The platform is also notably easy to configure relative to other open-source tools, with strong customization options that don't require deep developer involvement.
The main limitation is the same as any self-hosted solution: you own the infrastructure, which adds operational responsibility and removes the convenience of automatic updates or cloud backups that SaaS tools provide.
Paid options: Not available
Best for: SMBs with a basic technical setup that want a fully-featured, zero-cost HRMS and are comfortable managing their own servers.
WebHR: For very small teams that want modular flexibility
WebHR is free for teams of five or fewer employees and covers the basics: employee records, a built-in messenger, a discussion forum, and core HR administration. What makes it worth mentioning is its modular upgrade model. If and when you outgrow the free plan, you can add individual features like payroll or recruitment for as little as $1–2 per employee per month, rather than jumping to a full paid tier.
That said, WebHR no longer offers a perpetual free plan for new users; you can sign up for a trial. The interface is functional but dated, and the platform hasn't kept pace with the design standards of newer competitors. Worth a look if budget is the overriding constraint and your team is very small.
Paid options: Starting at $2/user/month
Best for: Micro-teams of five or fewer that want to get started at near-zero cost with the option to add individual modules as needs grow.

Free HR software often looks like a cost-saving win upfront, but hidden limitations, upgrade pressure, and lower support can make it more restrictive—and costly—over time.
Choosing Based on “Free” Instead of Fit
