Introduction to Employee Recognition Software

Among the dozens of technology platforms dedicated to Human Resources, none is as impactful on company culture as employee recognition software. Buyer options expand as our understanding of the importance of employee engagement grows. So, if you are shopping for the right vendor, it’s critical to get your bearings in the landscape before making your selection.

Our team has been watching this space for years, so we’re confident that our recommendations represent the best of the best. But we want to offer more than our top picks. This article will introduce you to our methods and tools you can use to come to your own conclusion.

Read on for in-depth reviews of all the top vendors, a pricing guide, an ROI calculation tool, and more. With the help of industry expert Amanda Shea (founder, The New England Agency), staff writer, editor, and HR expert Alison Hunter, and, as always, SSR founder and CEO Phil Strazzulla, you’ll be guided through the process of finding the right employee recognition platform for your needs.

A 2022 study found that employee recognition platforms resulted in four times the number of employees reporting they felt “engaged.” The same study found that employee recognition software made employees 53% less likely to look for another job actively.

Employee engagement statistics and studies on employee retention all draw the same conclusions: if you keep your workers happy, they will do good work and stick around. There is a clear, causal relationship between recognition, employee engagement, productivity, and retention.

While the term “employee experience” is relatively new to the HR landscape, the days of the break room birthday cake have long since gone the way of the gold watch. Today’s employers understand that to combat stress, limit turnover, and boost productivity, you must have an employee recognition program that emphasizes well-being and company culture.

In a recent conversation, Shea cited the importance of recognition programs. She noted that modern workers expect coaching, development, and recognition, including positive feedback.

Of course, a positive feedback culture isn’t the only component of a successful business. But before you start exploring all of the HR tech trends of 2023, let’s look at the benefits of employee recognition programs.

Our Criteria: Here's How We Chose The Best Employee Recognition & Rewards Program Platforms

Our selection criteria are rooted in our dedication to helping our readers find and buy the right employee experience software. We start the process with our own professional experience from working HR, so  we can get the most out of product demonstrations and user research.

The apex of our analysis comes only after a product has passed numerous checkpoints: we ask HR thought leaders to share their insights, users for feedback, and grill vendors on demos. For a full, more detailed understanding of our approach, check out this article on our editorial guidelines.

Among the numerous factors we consider, the three most critical for employee recognition software are peer-to-peer recognition, analytics/reporting, and automation.

Peer-to-Peer Recognition

I’ve worked with at least a dozen employee recognition software platforms, and have found that employees most love peer-to-peer recognition. Who doesn’t want to celebrate and be celebrated for outstanding work?

Because it’s so critical, we only recommended platforms that enable managers and employees to provide and receive recognition with ease. For this to happen, the platform must offer integrations with existing internal communications tools like email, and team collaboration tools like Slack and Teams

Analytics/Reporting

It’s only natural, given our data nerdiness, that we evaluate platforms for analytics and reporting capabilities. Data-driven insights gleaned from reporting on factors like engagement and performance trends can identify under and over performing teams, what managers are excelling, and give an overall barometer for the employee experience.

When I worked in HR for a Fortune 500, I implemented changes based on engagement data I pulled from a data set that included more than 1,000 employees. We were able to see a correlation between peer-to-peer recognition and performance impact. With that data, we refined our engagement strategy, shifting our focus from primarily rewards-based to recognition-focused.

The impact was substantial, and was only possible with a sophisticated employee recognition tool.

Automation

Automation is a feature we look for regardless of the software type, but here’s why it is so critical for employee recognition software: nobody can remember everyone’s birthday.

In addition to acknowledging birthdays, automation features keep track of work anniversaries, team and personal milestones. Recognition of events like this are critical to building employee engagement, which leads to better performance.

We selected tools that offer seamless and timely recognition without any manual oversight, delivered to the platforms already in everyday use.

We pride ourselves on strict editorial standards and use a thorough process to vet and review software before we publish it on the site (and in fact, most vendors we have to end up rejecting).  This process includes having our team of HR and recruiting experts use the tool themselves, getting user feedback, and then evaluating the vendor on key metrics like their financial health, customer retention, and responsiveness to customer queries.  You can read more about how we evaluate vendors here.

Reward Gateway Review

Reward Gateway is an excellent tool for organizations that determine to have their reward and recognition program centered around retailer gift cards.

As we look into user feedback, the software provides on-the-spot tools for managers to give in-person or digital rewards, tracking benchmarks and making it possible to reward employees once they achieve the set goals.

Reward Gateway Customers

Samsung, Orbis, KPMG, Five Star Bank.

Reward Gateway Pricing

  • Reward Gateway employee reward and recognition solutions can be purchased separately and have custom pricing.
  • Teams in the UK or Australia can opt for the “Reward Gateway for Small Business” version, which charges £6 per employee per month, with no lock-in contract.

Best For

Reward Gateway’s reward and recognition program works for in-office, hybrid, and remote teams. Yet mid-size companies (51-500 employees) are the ones that typically make the most out of the software.

Why we picked Motivosity

Motivosity is the best pick for midsize businesses looking to take their employee experience to a new level via a mobile-friendly solution that incorporates straightforward recognition features, advanced reporting plus goal tracking, and eNPS into a single platform.

PROS

  • Motivosity is mobile-friendly. Users can access the platform via phones, desktops, and collaboration apps like Teams and Slack.
  • Motivosity offers free software (namely Connect) with fundamental features for employee engagement.
  • Motivosity’s free trials are available for all paid subscriptions.
  • It’s easy to give a shout-out or recognition to another colleague through the platform.
  • Motivosity’s built-in reporting provides helpful insights around potential attrition, most recognized employees, and managers that need coaching.
  • Motivosity’s users love the new version of the app.
  • Employees can access this system from their phones, desktop, and apps they are in at work such as Teams/Slack
  • One platform that combines rewards, recognition, employee engagement, and more
  • Built in reporting with insights around potential attrition, most recognized employees, managers that need coaching, etc.

CONS

  • Only has dollar (not points) based rewards.
  • Lack of rules to regulate the distribution of points. For example, a team member could give 100% of their monthly rewards to a friend.
  • Some features, including 1:1s and coaching, need more refinement.
  • Only has dollar (not points) based rewards.  Their research shows dollars is more effective, but many companies want points.
  • Some users claimed sometimes it can be a bit buggy connecting to Slack to notify people that an appreciation came through.
  • It would have broadened the number of gift card options for users to choose from.
  • There could have been an easier way to integrate the software with swag stores. For now, you have to transfer funds to a card and then link that card with the swag store, which slows down a bit the process to cash in funds.

Bonusly’s peer-to-peer employee recognition platform is an excellent tool for teams who want to recognize and reward employees with shoutouts tied to company values, gift cards, cash, and donations.

Reviewer's Rating
10/10

We created a slack channel so you can see who is receiving points every day. I give out points to coworkers about 5x a month until my allotted amount is used up. You can easily integrate with slack, use the browser, or the app. Anytime someone helps me out, I send a few points over to say thank you!

What do you like about this tool?

I like that I can recognize coworkers that help me out and that the whole company will see it. I also like that I can get a sense of what each department is working on and with. It allows you to see all that is being done in the company, not just the specific people you work with. Lastly, you can redeem your points for cash prizes which is a great benefit. It is a great engagement tool for the company!

Why did your organization buy this tool, and how long have you used it for?

Since going fully remote, our company struggled with building culture and engagement. We also wanted a way to show recognition for all the hard work being done on a daily basis. We started using Bonusly 6 months ago and have had a fantastic experience so far. Bonusly allows our team to stay engaged, have fun with each other, see the different projects going on all over the company, and feel valued for their work. It's easy to use and does exactly what we were wanting.

What do you dislike about this tool?

I really don't have any complaints about Bonusly. The Slack integration could use some slight improvements but nothing major. I have not found an auto-billing setting that would save me some time. There could be more email reminders to employees who are not engaging on Bonusly.

How is this tool different than their competitors?

They have a competitive price, easy set-up, great customer service, an easy-to-use website, and awesome options for prizes to redeem your points for.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Be sure to budget for the subscription and points you want to give out. You will want to make sure your employees have an easy way to access it. It works well for us because everyone is working on their laptop all day. Decide if you want to give out cash rewards or experiences.

How has this tool changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

We have added more prizes to it and incorporated them into all of our cultural events. Anytime we want to reward someone or give a prize - we use Bonusly!

What specific type of user or organization is this tool very good for?

Companies that work primarily on a computer. Can be for in-person or remote settings.

What specific type of user or organization would this tool not be a good fit for?

Employees that do not have desk jobs would most likely not use it as much since they do not have easy assess to the website.

Why we picked Terryberry

Terryberry is perhaps the most feature-rich and seasoned solution in the business of corporate recognition. The platform has been in this space for over a century and has been the favorite pick for companies with a global presence, based in the US and the UK.

PROS

  • Terryberry offers a wide range of employee engagement features, including rewards, incentives, and a wellness tracker.
  • Terryberry provides customized physical goods as employee rewards.
  • Customer support and account management at Terryberry are quite good. Their reps stand out for being very responsive and attentive according to user feedback.
  • Terryberry’s implementation process, while six weeks long, is quite comprehensive, and you get tons of help along the way. For instance, the last two weeks consist of internal and customer testing and user training.
  • Customized physical goods as employee rewards
  • Wide range of employee engagement features, including rewards, incentives, and a wellness tracker.
  • Customer support and account management at Terryberry are quite good. Their reps stand out for being very responsive and attentive, which is evidenced by some of the client testimonials we read.
  • The implementation process, while six weeks long, is quite comprehensive, and you get tons of help along the way. For instance, the last two weeks consist of internal and customer testing, as well as user training.

CONS

  • While Terryberry is easy to use, its design could look more modern and sleek.
  • No open API, but on the roadmap for the end of 2023.
  • No free trial at the moment.

Terryberry Review

Terryberry packs one of the broadest feature-set we’ve seen an employee recognition platform have. It includes social recognition, a feedback and communication tool, a wellness app, employee service awards & custom jewelry, performance management, incentive programs, and a global rewards catalog.

We got an inside look at this during a 2023 video demo and it was tough to get a walkthrough of the many features within a single call. If you get a demo with Terryberry, we recommend coming prepared. Identify the specific workflows that are critical for you and ask for them to be covered in detail.

Of course, it’s also worth looking into their custom awards offerings. Few companies can manufacture anything from a trophy to a belt buckle to your specification while also managing the software you’d use to identify the employees you’d like to recognize and reward.

Terryberry Customers

Terryberry is used by over 40,000 customers, including Wyndham Destinations, Epsilon, General Motors, Hard Rock Casino, and Trilogy Health.

Terryberry Pricing

Terryberry’s pricing is scalable and varies according to your choice of subscription package. The good news is that you can opt for only certain parts of the platform and grow as you go. Their basic subscriptions start at $3 per award recipient, but to get a proper estimate, the way forward is to contact them.

Also worth mentioning is that they charge set-up fees, and an annual admin fee that’s based on employee headcount and the number of redemptions made on the reward platform.

Best For

Those best served by Terryberry are companies in the US and the UK— of any size and industry, but they do have global capabilities. It’s especially good for those with a substantial number of deskless employees for whom physical gifts are ideal.

Terryberry is also a good bet for companies who want  to add performance and wellness apps into the mix without adding an additional vendor to the ecosystem. All this being said, some small businesses might find the price point a bit high if on a tight budget.

Why we picked Kudos

Kudos is a multilanguage interactive recognition platform that is rare for providing consulting services in addition to its recognition tools. This has made Kudos best for international teams looking to build an engaging workplace culture via peer-to-peer recognition.

PROS

  • Kudos possesses a set of unique, company culture-oriented features that are present all across the platform.
  • Kudos’ users love how easy it is to navigate the recognition tool.
  • Kudos has all the bells and whistles as standard on both web and mobile versions.
  • Kudos is available in 11 languages.
  • Unique, company culture-oriented features are present all across the platform, such as in the way they approach analytics, or on the actual Culture Accelerator module.
  • Excellent relation of mobile / desktop functionality. You basically get all the bells and whistles on both versions.

CONS

  • An insider's help is needed to get a good idea of the Kudos app from the website, so a demo is necessary.
  • The UX/UI could be improved: some users reported issues with attaching images, .gifs, and emojis.
  • No free version and no trial version.
  • Unless you get a demo and start exploring the tool with the help of an insider, we’d say it’s somewhat hard to get a good idea of what features are like, how they work, and even what they do, just from their website alone.
  • From our research, we could gather that the points system and how this works can get a bit confusing for some users.

WorkTango Review

WorkTango’s recognition engine is a massive part of its offering. It checks all the boxes regarding employee recognition: a company feed, a points system, a broad rewards catalog, or the option to add custom rewards.

Awardco Review

Awardco is technically a rewards platform known for their Amazon-integrated catalog, but this tool does much more. It also has all the features you’d expect in a recognition platform, like a social media feed, an emphasis on peer-to-peer appreciation, and a general inclination toward employee engagement.

They provide flexible settings that enable admins to customize programs unique to their company culture, and they are built for use by teams in the U.S. and beyond.

Awardco Customers

Amazon, Ford, JPMorgan Chase, Pinterest, Cornell, Chick-fil-A, Paramount.

Awardco Pricing

Why we picked Guusto

Guusto is easy to set up, but what makes it rare in the market is its forever-free plan. It’s best for teams in the US and Canada looking for a solution to get started quickly while carrying features for both social recognition and rewards.

PROS

  • Guusto is remote-friendly and planet-conscious: All gift cards are digital, so no plastic waste and no shipping.
  • Guusto’s gifts are real dollar value – not points.
  • Guusto offers both Android and iOS apps.
  • Guusto’s subscription fee is for reward givers only. Free, unlimited recipients.
  • Guusto partners with One Drop Foundation: the platform donates one day of clean drinking water for every gift sent.

  • They partnered with the One Drop Foundation to donate 1 day of clean drinking water for every gift sent.

Guusto Review

Guusto is known for being easy to set up, but what makes it rare in the market is its permanent free plan.

Guusto's forever-free plan is a good deal for those who want their entire budget spent on the gifts themselves rather than features like social feeds, integrations, or budget allocation. One catch: the free plan allows only one “giver” account.

Gifts can be selected from Guusto merchant partners by the giver or the receiver. A full refund is applied for the cost of gifts that are not used within a set claim period.

Overall, users love Guusto for its simplicity, transparent price, and custom rewards program. Another major plus for many users is Guusto’s partnership with programs that support fresh water initiatives around the world.

Guusto Customers

Harvard University, The Body Shop, Fairmont, Rexall.

Guusto Pricing

Guusto offers the following pricing plans:

  • Individual: Free. As a single user, you only pay for rewards.
  • Essential: Starts from $2.25 per member/month
  • Premium: Starts from $3.50 per member/month.

Worth noting: Subscription fees only apply to team members sending gifts, not to employees who may receive gifts. Some contract minimums may apply.

Best For

Companies in the US and Canada looking for a plug-and-play solution for employee rewards and recognition. It’s good for both small and large teams that need something to get started with quickly but has all the features for social recognition, albeit with a limited rewards catalog (only gift cards). Benefits of the Best Employee Recognition Platform

The impact of a good employee recognition program is felt company-wide. Here are some of the benefits.

  • Increase Engagement: Employees are encouraged to engage regularly and positively. These interactions reinforce company values and, in turn, contribute to a strong company culture. If all goes as planned (and as designed by the platform), this will result in higher output, more referrals to fill open roles, increased retention, etc.
  • Automation: The foundational function of this software is peer-to-peer recognition, which is a mixture of both organic and automated processes. Fully automated features can include recognition of work anniversaries, birthdays, or awards like employee of the month.
  • Save Time: These platforms have built-in playbooks. Some even have dedicated consultants to customize your program. Taking these cumbersome tasks away from your (probably overworked) HR team will be a popular decision.

Pro Tips on Employee Recognition Software

Employee Recognition Software Pricing

There are two main pricing models for employee recognition tools: “per-employee/per-month”, and “marketplace”. We’ll start with the latter.

Using the marketplace model, an employer pays a percentage of their spend on the platform For example, if you spend $50,000/yr on employee recognition, their fee is X% of $50k.

With this model, what you get and what you pay for are clearly linked. In this way, the marketplace model is basically value-based pricing. Customers often prefer this model because it means the product is often free to start (minus implementation fees, if applicable). Starting a pilot program can be hard, but a free pilot program is a little bit easier.

Here are some guidelines on pricing for these types of employee recognition programs:

Employee Rewards Program Pricing
EmployeesAnnual SpendFee as % of Spend Vendor Fee
100$40,00018%$7,200
1,000$400,00010%$40,000
10,000$4,000,0006%$240,000

The second pricing model is the standard per-employee/per-month. This is a good choice for companies who engage their employees frequently.

Here’s what the pricing looks like for this model:

Employee Recognition Program Pricing
EmployeesPrice/Employee/MoTotal Annual Cost
10$10$12,000
100$9.50$114,000
1,000$5.70$684,000

Please note these pricing schemes are general guidelines to help with budgeting and not meant to be hard and fast rules. Many factors go into pricing. We’re also trying to offer advice on what to expect across several vendors, each of which charges a bit differently.

Employee Recognition Software FAQs

What is employee recognition software?‍

Employee recognition software helps organizations build a strong culture, retain employees, and supercharge their employee experience through simple-to-use programs which allow employees to acknowledge one another's great work. In broad stokes: they promote employee engagemnet.

How does employee recognition software help with employee engagement?

By recognizing achievements, providing rewards, and giving useful feedback, employee recognition software will boost employee engagement. If an employee feels valued, they will be more engaged and do better work.

What is the difference between employee rewards and employee recognition?‍

Employee rewards are gifts, tangible or intangible, given in recognition of achievements. Employee recognition is intangible but powerful. Peer-to-peer recognition and praise, delivered through social media, company chats, or in person, are proven to boost employee engagement.

What are some examples of employee recognition?‍

  • Celebrating an individual’s achievements at a company-wide celebration
  • Recongizing the employee of the month
  • Peer-tp-peer shout outs for a terrific job
  • A personalized thank you note or email

How do I measure the success of my employee recognition software?‍

The short-term efficacy of employee recognition software is easy to measure. If more than 90% of your employees are recognizing each other each month, your program is a success. Tracking long-term effects will require analyzing data around employee retention and other engagement metrics.

Employee Recognition Program Best Practices

Here are the best practices we’ve collected from talking to a few dozen HR professionals about their employee recognition initiatives.

  • HRIS Integration: Do not underestimate the time it takes to work with a non-integrated system. Not only will resources be spent on manual maintenance, the program's efficacy will also likely suffer.
  • Internal comms: Avoid products that don’t integrate with comms platforms like Slack and MS Teams. This is critical. If employees have to log into another system to participate, the program is more likely to fail.
  • Make time: HR teams are busy, plain and simple. Be sure you make time for your HR team to regularly attend to the health of this program (monthly or quarterly check-ups should do the trick). Also, use all the automation available in the platform: events like birthdays and work anniversaries should be automated.
  • Manager buy-in: make it clear to managers why this program is important (and how it benefits them, specifically), and remember that if you have already gone through the process of getting  leadership buy-in, you’ve done most of the work!
  • Enable peer-to-peer interactions: Make sure employees are able to recognize other people in the organization. This should not an optional feature – this cannot be a top-down tool.
  • Set realistic expectations: These products are not a magical cure for ailing company culture. They can enhance positive aspects, but they cannot resurrect the culture of a company that needs a major intervention. Sometimes a massive restructuring, a change in leadership, or the expert council of a consultant is needed to pull a team out of the dumps.
  • Don’t Overthink it: Our best advice to you: just do it! Skip the infinate strategy meetings and handwringing about which perks to offer, to whom, and how. Find the right vendor and follow their playbook. This is your best chace of success!
