If you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’re looking for a way to manage and pay contractor workers, perhaps many of them remote. If you’re looking for a way to manage the work you assign to freelancers, however, check out our list of the top 13 freelance management systems.

As to contractors, digital tools for managing construction projects and workers are also called contractor management software, (that’s why we prefer “construction management software”). So, if you’re here for that, please refer to our list of the best project management tools. If you’re still here and are looking for a good way to hire, pay, and manage the work of your contractors anywhere in the world, this is the list for you.

Still on the fence about needing a system to manage and pay all your contractors? What if you only have one? Well, we did the research and found that things do get a lot easier and not too expensive with one of these platforms. As more workers quit their jobs to become their own bosses, maybe you’ll rely on contractor workers even more than now. Having one of the platforms we’ve reviewed here can certainly save hours of time and make onboarding and multi-country payroll headaches a thing of the past.

We spend hundreds of hours researching the best HR and recruiting software so you don’t have to.  We never take money from vendors during our research phase and rely heavily on practitioners and experts to help us recommend the right software.  However we may earn a fee if you click on vendor links on this page. Our criteria: How we chose the best vendors

We take our research seriously and want to make sure we are presenting our readers with the very best solutions in a given software category.  Here's how we select vendors to be in our buyer guides:

  • Product: We want to have a deep understanding of a vendor's product before recommending it.  This usually means getting a demo by a senior executive (their CEO, head of product, etc), and/or using the product ourselves to make sure it has a solid UI, intuitive workflows, and the features to make it a best in class offering.
  • User feedback: We do our best to understand what users say when they experience this product.  User input allows us to accomplish a more thorough due diligence of products, put new vendors on our radar, and generally make sure we are presenting the right products to our readers.
  • Financial metrics: We are very much finance nerds and so use a product's retention rates, growth, profitability, and scale to understand whether or not it is truly best in class.
  • Best for a use case: Sometimes the best solution is the cheapest, the best tool for international companies, or the best for startups. We try to include a diversity of solutions so that our readers can find the tool that is best for what they need.

Here's more detail if you want to read further on how we research vendors.

Last Advice on Buying Contractor Management Software

Deciding on what’s the best contractor management software is largely a matter of your particular needs and situation. If you’re dealing only with contractors from your home country, as opposed to a global workforce, the decision might be entirely different.

That’s why our last advice here is to be very sincere and specific about what you expect the tool to do and how your situation might change in the future. By knowing this well in advance of booking a demo with 2-3 of the companies we’ve mentioned here, you’ll help them decide which part of their platform to show you and whether the organizations are a good fit.

Lastly, if it’s at all a possibility that you might employ one or several of your contractors in the future, we recommend taking a look at the EOR and PEO services spaces as well. Some of the companies we mentioned here also work as those sorts of organizations, so it’s best to get a good idea of the landscape before you make a decision. Good luck!
