With the number of unfilled programming related jobs expected to reach One million by 2020, the demand for talented engineers and programmers is soaring. For businesses, finding and attracting the most qualified engineers is crucial for success, but the process can be extremely time consuming and costly. In fact, the estimated cost of hiring one engineer is as high as $22,750. Given such high costs, recruiters need to start rethinking the way they hire programmers.
Tech Assessment Platforms
For many recruiters, the answer to hiring better engineers without sacrificing too much time and money is technology assessment software. These developer assessment tools help recruiters and engineering teams screen candidates through tools such as coding challenges, games, and lessons that test a candidate’s technical skills.
Tech assessment platforms also include reporting tools that automatically sort and analyze candidates results. For engineers and programmers in particular, a resume is often not a good predictor of how well a candidate will actually preform in a certain job. By using skills-based assessments with fair, unbiased scoring, recruiters are able to automatically eliminate unqualified candidates and focus their attention on candidates who have the right technical skills.
Save Time, Save Money
Implementing these recruitment tools to vet engineering candidates can have a significant impact on the time and money a business spends in recruiting. By screening out candidates who lack the necessary technical skills, coding interview platforms reduce the time that engineers would have to spend in the early stages of the hiring process and help focus engineers’ time only on the most qualified candidates. This time savings translates to big financial savings for companies as well.
For a more concrete understanding of how these tech assessment platforms can save businesses a lot of time and money, we looked at case study with data from Qualified.io to see how much the company TrueCar saved when implementing the Qualified.io tech assessment platform.
With the tech assessment platform, TrueCar found that they were able to decrease their average time spent in the hiring process by 2.25 hours per candidate. Let’s say that the cost of productivity for an engineer at the company is $150 per hour and the company hires one candidate for every 10 that they screen. With these parameters, decreasing the time per candidate by 2.25 hours, would mean saving $3,375 per hire. For a company making 100 hires per year, this would mean hundreds of thousands of dollars saved.
Better Candidate Experience
The great thing about tech assessment tools is that they not only benefit a business, but benefit the candidates as well. For example, developer assessment platforms allow engineers to showcase their real skills instead of relying on interview skills that may not be applicable to the job. By using fair and reliable scoring methods, coding tests also help reduce recruiter bias. They may also give potential employees to get a better sense of the kind of work they will be doing. While recruiting teams sometimes use whiteboard coding tests to get a sense for a candidate’s technical chops, these tests can create a high-stress environment that is unrealistic in terms of the work the candidate will actually be doing. Using coding interview platforms gives potential employees the chance to showcase their programming ability and problem-solving skills in a lower stress, realistic setting.
