Deel Review

We first came across Deel in early 2021, relatively shortly after their foundation in 2019, in the midst of the pandemic. Back then, they were amongst a small-but-growing group of exciting new companies spearheading the category of Global Payroll Software.

While researching those companies and testing their products, Deel immediately stood out for their crisp and sleek design, ease of use, intuitive workflows, and highly attentive customer support and sales team.

Years later, it’s great to still see them among the now ‘usual suspects’ when it comes to international payroll software. That being said, they’ve also expanded and are currently among the top companies developing HR software specific to remote teams.

We last tested their tool in 2026, and it was immediately clear that it had grown quite a bit since the last demo. While initially focused on hiring and payroll, the platform has expanded its functionality to include a wider range of capabilities, such as Core HR tools, equity management, flexible workspaces, benefits, and other perks like discounts from brands.

The main modules, like hiring, have also acquired a new level of sophistication. The product's core now includes immigration support, background checks, and a module called “Shield”, which provides further advice on the best way to avoid fees when hiring team members and freelancers overseas.

Deel is notable for having a good balance of EOR and contractor focus. This flexibility is part of what we find great about the international payroll platform. For instance, we know of small businesses that started their Deel journey using it only to hire contractors globally. After a while, if their business is ready, they can use the same tool to hire people locally via the EOR offering.

For EOR customers, their international team helps with navigating local labor laws, compliance documents, essentially hiring the employee on your behalf and acting as the legal entity. One thing to note is that, depending on the country, the legal entity might not be Deel itself but one of their partners.

Lastly, the previously-mentioned “Shield” module is worth a closer look. It’s basically an extension of their contractor hiring workflow that includes an expert assessment for individual workers to determine whether, given the particular set of factors, the worker and employer would be better served by the individual working as a contractor, or as an employee. At the same time, engaging people this way means that Deel will absorb all the liability should there be any compliance issues.

Deel is used daily by the HR team, as it integrates all the necessary tools into a single system. The team uses the recruiting platform along with the Deel Talent Network of recruiters. The global-first platform provides visibility into the entire worker lifecycle, allowing us to monitor employee trends across departments and levels of the company.

Recently, Deel released new modules, including a workforce planning module, which has been helpful for growing teams within the organization. This module has supported growth tracking through custom approval workflows.

What do you like about Deel?
  • I like their AI-led ATS, which sets them apart from many competing systems.
  • The Deel Talent Network is a valuable resource for finding recruiters and recruiting firms without signing additional contracts or sourcing them independently.
  • Deel continues to evolve to meet user needs, and the system regularly alerts users to compliance changes. For example, there was an alert that the state of Hawaii will increase its minimum wage in 2028, allowing users to remain compliant with state laws.
Why did your organization buy Deel, and how long have you used it for?

The organization I worked for chose Deel for its global compliance capabilities. The company has employees across multiple countries, so it was important to find a platform that could help the team manage compliance from one country to another.

The key features that stand out beyond the global platform include their AI-led ATS and their talent network of pre-vetted recruiters. These tools helped streamline recruiting and compliance within one system. The platform has been in use for about one year.

What do you dislike about Deel?

I used Deel regularly—at a minimum weekly, and more heavily around payment cycles. Most of my day-to-day use was tied to contractor onboarding and ongoing pay management, so I was on the platform anytime we added a new international contractor or needed to update an agreement.

The main workflow involved creating or sending out contractor agreements, confirming that the person completed their profile and payment details, and routing invoices or payment requests through an approval step before payouts.

During pay periods, I used it to review amounts, confirm currencies, and validate that everything matched what was approved, especially when there were changes such as bonus payments, rate adjustments, or one-off reimbursements.

I used Deel for basic recordkeeping as well, including pulling contract details, reviewing payment history, and exporting data when finance needed reconciliation or reporting.

Overall, it was less of a daily HRIS login tool for me and more of a core operational system we depended on to keep global contractor payments clean, consistent, and on time.

What do you like about Deel?

It makes paying international contractors straightforward and predictable, especially when dealing with different currencies and banking formats.

The onboarding flow is clean, so contractors can enter their details and documents themselves without my team chasing them in email threads.

Approvals and payment tracking are easy to manage in one place, which reduces mistakes and helps finance reconcile faster.

Contracts, invoices, and payment history stay organized inside the platform, so I’m not digging through folders or spreadsheets when questions come up.

Why did your organization buy Deel, and how long have you used it for?

We bought Deel because we needed a reliable way to pay international contractors without turning every pay cycle into a mini compliance project.

Before Deel, we were juggling wires, invoices, random payment platforms, and constant back-and-forth about banking details, currency conversions, and whether we were collecting the right documentation.

The biggest pain point was consistency — we needed one place where contractors could onboard, submit what they needed, and get paid on time in their local currency without our team reinventing the process every month.

Deel reduced risk by creating a more structured workflow around contracts and payments, so we weren’t relying on someone’s spreadsheet to keep everything straight.

The key benefit for us was speed and control: we could add contractors quickly, manage approvals, and run payments with far fewer surprises, especially as the contractor headcount grew across multiple countries.

I personally used Deel for two years, and during that time, it became the system we relied on whenever we brought on or paid someone outside the U.S.

What do you dislike about Deel?

Reporting and exports are adequate for basic needs, but they are not always as flexible as finance teams want when specific breakdowns are required.

The cost was somewhat high compared to tools like Gusto.

How is Deel different than their competitors?

Deel was fine for global contractor pay, but if I had the choice, I’d prefer Gusto because it’s more intuitive for U.S. payroll/HR and feels like less of a system to manage

Cost would be a big one to consider. Other than that, contractor pay was straightforward. I didn't use it for tax paying individuals.

As Head of HR, I’m in the Deel platform two or three times a week to oversee the entire lifecycle of our external workforce. My primary workflow involves onboarding and offboarding contractors, which I find to be the most improved part of their system recently.

I use the dashboard to ensure new hires are set up correctly and that their background checks—run through their Certn integration—are linked properly. During the monthly payroll cycle, I use the platform to review and approve invoices so our contractors are paid their hourly rates on time.

I also use it for offboarding, though that process has been frustrating lately, as the platform fails to block unauthorized fund requests from former contractors. It’s our main hub for contractor operations, but it requires a level of oversight I didn’t initially expect.

What do you like about Deel?

It’s very user-friendly. It offers contracts customized for each country we’ve hired from. It works well for a hybrid model. The steps to add people to the system are straightforward.

Why did your organization buy Deel, and how long have you used it for?

We brought Deel on about two years ago to streamline how we manage our global network of remote contractors at Topflight Apps. At the time, our main pain point was finding a centralized way to handle international contracts and payouts without navigating a dozen different local banking systems.

We were looking for a “quick and legal” solution that would allow us to scale our remote team while keeping all our documentation in one place. While the tool has definitely simplified our payment runs and initial onboarding, we’ve realized over time that it functions more as a high-end payment processor than a true legal partner.

Even though the platform provides customized templates for different countries, the actual protection is limited unless you’re on one of their higher-tier plans. We use it because it centralizes our administrative work, but we’ve had to stay very hands-on with actual legal risk management.

What do you dislike about Deel?

We primarily chose Deel for legal protection, but recent experience shows it functions more as a payment tool than a compliance partner. We offboarded a contractor for misconduct, but they were still able to request extra funds through the platform.

Despite my report and full documentation, Deel has been silent. They aren’t actually managing our legal risks as promised.

How is Deel different than their competitors?

Deel is easier for us to use and offers flat-fee pricing. If you value peace of mind, it’s the stronger choice.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Determine exactly who is liable if a contractor is reclassified as an employee by local authorities. Standard $49/month plans usually provide templates but leave the legal risk with you. If you need the platform to defend against legal action or cover penalties, you’ll need to upgrade to the “Shield” or “Contractor of Record” tiers.

The contractor onboarding process has improved over the last few years. They’ve also integrated with background check providers such as Certn, which we already use.

As a new product, Deel has changed a lot since its inception. Its newest offering, DeelHR, allows companies to complete most of their HR operations tasks in Deel.

Deel is quite quick to implement if you choose to hire people solely as contractors. It’s somewhat of a self-service process if you go at it like this, but we do recommend getting a demo and emailing their support team as much as you need, especially if it’s your first time setting up a global payroll solution for a remote team.

You’d start by signing up, inviting team members to join, and having them onboard themselves by signing a contract, validating their ID, and choosing a fund withdrawal method. We found the process to be quite straightforward. One notable thing is how strong the platform is with GDPR compliance and security. For instance, they send a verification code each time you sign in, right to your email, which is far more convenient than having to use a separate app for it.

For the EOR part, implementation is more complex, but you certainly get more hand-holding from the Deel team in the process. So, you’d get an estimated timeline upon beginning.

Deel has a fairly comprehensive searchable FAQ section accessible to current and prospective customers. For current clients, they offer 100% in-house support with a 1.25 min first response time from local country experts. Additionally, they have a large database of video tutorials explaining how to utilize their software.

Deel was founded in 2019 by Shuo Wang and Alex Bouaziz. After they graduated from MIT in 2014, the pair began to notice a common occurrence among their friends; they would get rejected from high-skilled jobs that they were great fits for only because of visa and immigration hurdles.

Years later, as the trend continued to hold true, they decided to create an EOR and couple it with the right tech that could let people hire an employee overseas in a few minutes.
