BambooHR Review

BambooHR tries to accommodate one or another version of their technology to fit your business. Their HR platform spans across the employee lifecycle as they have tons of other functionalities (like a full ATS or a performance management module) in addition to the core HRIS offer.

They do offer the core HR part as a stand-alone product. The way they package features can be flexible. For instance, they have a small business package called Essentials.

This package covers all the HR Management features like employee records, benefit tracking, standard reporting, document storage and more. It also has the employee self-service module, which is where workers can manage their time off, consult the employee directory and org chart, see a company calendar, and do all this from either the desktop version or the mobile app.

Further, Modules like payroll, time tracking, and performance management are offered as add-ons. If you need more, you can opt for the Advantage package. This plan includes onboarding and offboarding features, the Applicant Tracking System, advanced reporting, company branding, access to the open API, satisfaction surveys, and much more.

The flexibility of building out your plan like this is part of what keeps drawing one HR team after another to the tool. Arguably, it’s also what makes BambooHR one of the most popular HR software products of all time.

The product itself is fairly easy to use and figure out on your own. It’s one of the most simple tools to navigate that packs so many features. At SSR, we’ve demoed the tool, tried it for free, and even worked at companies where it was the HRIS of choice. We can say it’s rare to have to consult any help articles in order to make use of the tool. You just log in, do what you have to do, and trust that your colleagues will be notified.

Take the process of requesting time off, for instance. A worker would log in, send the request to their manager, and the manager gets an email notification. Once approved or rejected, the worker gets an email notification as well and the company calendar is updated accordingly. There’s no need for the worker to log back into the tool.

Lastly, BambooHR also have numerous amenities like an app marketplace of HR/recruiting vendors that integrate with their system, an HR glossary, and host HR events on occasion.

What users think of BambooHR

Reviewer's Rating
8/10

At a SaaS organization I worked for, I used BambooHR daily as our primary HRIS platform before transitioning to a larger system to manage core HR processes for our global workforce across multiple countries.

My daily use included processing new hire onboarding workflows, where I would set up employee profiles, manage document collection, and coordinate multi-step onboarding to ensure compliance across our India, London, and U.S. operations.

Job changes were another critical workflow I regularly managed—my team frequently updated employee records for promotions, transfers, and role modifications while ensuring proper approvals and maintaining accurate organizational charts and reporting structures.

Pay changes required careful coordination through BambooHR, where I processed salary adjustments, bonus allocations, and equity updates while ensuring proper documentation and approval workflows were followed for compliance.

Termination processes were handled through BambooHR’s offboarding workflows, where I managed benefit terminations, final pay dates, and asset recovery documentation while maintaining appropriate legal records.

The platform served as our central system of record for all employee data, and I relied on it heavily for generating reports, tracking compliance requirements, and maintaining data integrity across our rapidly scaling organization.

What do you like about BambooHR?
  • The automation capabilities streamline repetitive HR processes, allowing me to focus on strategic initiatives while ensuring consistent execution of routine tasks.
  • The open API enabled seamless integration with other systems in our tech stack, eliminating manual data entry and reducing errors.
  • The ability to manage signatures and approvals directly through the system, while automatically storing them in employees’ digital files, created an efficient, paperless workflow that improved compliance.
Why did your organization buy BambooHR, and how long have you used it for?

Our organization purchased BambooHR prior to my joining the company. However, as the leader of the People Operations team, I know it was selected because we were a fast-growing SaaS company that needed a reliable HRIS solution to maintain compliance for our expanding global employee population.

The previous process was highly manual, lacked automation, and was inadequate for managing the complexities of multi-jurisdictional employment requirements, benefits administration, and the documentation standards necessary for a scaling organization.

BambooHR provided the foundational infrastructure to centralize employee records, automate compliance tracking, and ensure consistent HR processes across different regions and regulatory environments.

Key benefits include streamlined onboarding workflows, automated compliance reporting, and improved visibility into workforce data to support strategic decision-making.

I have been using BambooHR for over three years and have found it particularly valuable for maintaining data integrity during ongoing growth while ensuring we meet all regulatory requirements across our global operations.

What do you dislike about BambooHR?
  • The lack of a job table to connect pay ranges to specific job codes made it difficult to maintain consistent compensation structures and ensure pay equity across similar roles.
  • The limited organizational chart views prevented us from designing and modeling future organizational changes within the system, forcing us to use external tools for workforce planning.
  • The absence of built-in compliance checks allowed for data inconsistencies, such as employees based in London having pay rates listed in USD instead of the appropriate local currency.
How is BambooHR different than their competitors?

BambooHR is a solid system for small to mid-sized organizations seeking a straightforward HRIS solution that’s easy to implement and user-friendly for basic HR functions.

Compared to competitors, BambooHR performs reasonably well in supporting global operations initially, but it lacks the sophisticated configuration options and advanced analytics that larger, more complex organizations require.

As an organization grows and requires intricate approval workflows, advanced reporting, job architecture frameworks, or automated compliance capabilities, BambooHR's limitations become more evident.

What I appreciate about BambooHR is its simplicity and rapid implementation compared to enterprise-level systems. It serves as an excellent stepping stone for growing companies, but those with complex HR needs will eventually need to migrate to more robust platforms capable of supporting enterprise-level operations and strategic data analysis.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Organizations should first assess their growth trajectory and how quickly they are scaling, as rapid growth may quickly outpace BambooHR’s capabilities. They should evaluate which workflows they want managed directly within the system versus outside it, since this affects both efficiency and data integrity.

Employee self-service functionality is another important consideration, as BambooHR offers limited options compared to more robust platforms, which may affect employee experience and increase HR workload.

Compliance complexity across different jurisdictions should also be reviewed to determine if the platform offers sufficient built-in compliance checks and reporting.

Lastly, integration with existing systems should be examined in terms of current API functionality and future integration plans as the organization evolves.

How has BambooHR changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

Yes, BambooHR has added several features in recent months, focusing on enhancements to its previously limited Applicant Tracking System and improved benefits management for organizations handling open enrollment and ongoing benefits administration through the platform. However, these updates appear misaligned with actual user needs.

The recruiting enhancements compete with numerous robust ATS options already available, making the development investment less impactful. Similarly, most organizations using BambooHR’s core features likely rely on benefits brokers to manage open enrollment, so the added functionality does little to reduce workload or justify the subscription cost.

The platform would be better served by focusing on strengthening its core HRIS capabilities, improving compliance automation, and expanding organizational management features instead of entering crowded markets dominated by specialized vendors.

What specific type of user or organization is BambooHR very good for?

The ideal user for BambooHR is a smaller organization seeking quick implementation with minimal IT involvement and a short deployment timeline.

These organizations generally want basic automation for routine HR tasks without the need for complex workflow configurations.

What specific type of user or organization would BambooHR not be a good fit for?

BambooHR may not be suitable for larger or more complex organizations that require advanced business processes with multi-level approvals, custom workflow routing, and intricate compliance automation across multiple jurisdictions.

Reviewer's Rating

I used BambooHR daily to manage different parts of the employee lifecycle. The workflows I relied on most were onboarding, where I could set up new hires with tasks and paperwork, and managing employee records, which improved accuracy and made information easy to find.

I also used it for performance reviews and to track time-off requests, which made it easier to stay organized. One of the most valuable features for me was the reporting and data tools.

I could quickly generate reports on headcount, turnover, and PTO balances, which gave leadership the insights they needed without spending hours in spreadsheets. This helped me identify trends in employee data and spot potential compliance issues early.

What do you like about BambooHR?
  • BambooHR is very user-friendly and easy for both HR and employees to navigate.
  • The onboarding workflows save a lot of time by automating tasks and paperwork for new hires.
  • The reporting features make it simple to generate useful data and track HR metrics.
  • Employee self-service tools allow staff to update their own information, reducing HR administrative work.
Why did your organization buy BambooHR, and how long have you used it for?

My organization chose BambooHR because we needed a more streamlined way to manage employee records, onboarding, and performance tracking. Before implementing it, our HR processes were very time-consuming, which made it hard to keep data accurate and accessible.

BambooHR solved that by giving us a central system where employees and managers could easily find what they needed. I have personally used it for about two years, and during that time I found it especially helpful for automating onboarding workflows and keeping employee information organized.

Overall, it made day-to-day HR administration much smoother and saved our team a lot of time.

What do you dislike about BambooHR?
  • Reporting is useful but can feel limited when trying to build more complex reports; adding more customization and advanced filters would make the tool more powerful.
  • The payroll integration is not as seamless as dedicated payroll platforms; it would be more efficient if it offered stronger built-in payroll functionality.
  • Customer support response times can be inconsistent, especially during peak seasons; a real-time chat feature would help resolve issues more quickly.
How is BambooHR different than their competitors?

BambooHR stands out from many competitors because of its clean, intuitive interface that makes it easy for both HR teams and employees to use. Compared to other systems I've used, it requires less training and onboarding, which improves adoption across the company.

It also offers strong onboarding workflows and employee self-service features that some competitors don't emphasize as much.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

When buying an HR tool like BambooHR, the first thing to consider is ease of use for both HR teams and employees, since adoption depends heavily on user experience. It's also important to look at how well the system integrates with payroll, benefits, and other platforms you already use.

Make sure the tool can grow with your organization rather than needing to be replaced after a few years.

How has BambooHR changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

BambooHR has evolved by expanding beyond core HR functions like employee records and onboarding to include more features such as performance management, time tracking, and payroll.

Over time, they have also improved the user interface and added more automation to simplify day-to-day tasks for both HR and employees.

What specific type of user or organization is BambooHR very good for?

BambooHR is well-suited for small to mid-sized organizations that need an all-in-one HR platform without the complexity of larger enterprise systems.

What specific type of user or organization would BambooHR not be a good fit for?

BambooHR may not be the best fit for very large enterprises that need advanced customization, complex reporting, or deep global payroll integrations.

Reviewer's Rating

At my former company, I used BambooHR for payroll functions and streamlining those processes. Overall, BambooHR caused more issues than it solved. The reporting and timekeeping features were very helpful, though. Benefits workflows ran smoothly and supported enrollment effectively. Tax filing was made simpler through the system.

What do you like about BambooHR?

I appreciated that BambooHR handled tracking well. The automation of some enrollment and setup processes was helpful. Lastly, it has a clean interface and is visually appealing.

Why did your organization buy BambooHR, and how long have you used it for?

I previously used BambooHR in another role for about two years. BambooHR was implemented to assist with onboarding, offboarding, and general reporting. Tracking and reporting workflows were the most useful to us at the time.

Payroll was not very functional, and it was difficult to get in touch with customer service. There were strong advantages in the reporting features, but the payroll issues outweighed those benefits.

What do you dislike about BambooHR?

I did not like the payroll functions, and they caused some issues. The BambooHR service team was not as responsive as we would have liked. Prices were higher than some competitors for the package we received, and most features were add-ons.

How is BambooHR different than their competitors?

Implementation was smooth, and there were no major issues when starting with BambooHR.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Company size should be considered carefully. Prices can increase significantly and become difficult to manage if the company is too big or too small. Midsized organizations are the best fit. Companies that need currency conversion should avoid BambooHR, as this function is lacking.

How has BambooHR changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

BambooHR’s compliance updates are frequent and remain aligned with regulations.

What specific type of user or organization is BambooHR very good for?

Midsized companies needing process automation will find BambooHR a great fit.

What specific type of user or organization would BambooHR not be a good fit for?

Large international companies will not benefit a lot from BambooHR.

HiBob

Bob is a global HR software platform that provides customizable features to streamline HR processes, including advanced functions such as compensation and workforce planning. But Bob particularly stands out for its focus on employee experience — from its funky, colorful interface reminiscent of 1970s disco, to employee recognition and interest groups that foster workplace connection. Bob is well-suited for most SMBs, but if your goal is to manage HR processes and improve platform adoption and engagement with employees, I recommend Bob. It's both fun to use and a powerful tool to manage people processes.

Who shouldn't buy BambooHR

Many of BambooHR’s features work grandly for businesses in virtually every part of the world. However, modules like payroll, hiring & onboarding, and time tracking are certainly either thought of for US business practices or, in the case of payroll, only available for US employees. International or remote businesses looking for an HRMS to handle both HR and payroll needs would not be a good fit. Unless, that is, they use the HR part only and integrate payroll through another vendor, like one of the best international payroll providers.

BambooHR Key Features

BambooHR has two feature sets. Essentials provides human resources management modules, employee self-service tools, and baseline customer support.

Advantage includes everything in Essentials but adds premium customer support, hiring and onboarding systems, an ATS, training, reporting, a job site, company branding, and access to BambooHR's partner marketplace and open API integration.

Add-ons such as time tracking, payroll, and performance management are available at additional costs.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the top features:

  • People Data & Analytics: BambooHR strives to be the single and secure database where all your employee information is stored and managed. They couple that with powerful, intuitive reporting tools and a strong focus on security.
  • Mobile Hiring App: One of their most-talked-about perks, their hiring app gives recruiters the ease to perform most applicant tracking tasks from their phone if needed.
  • Automated onboarding: Set up tasks to new hires for them to complete at a time of their choosing.
  • Introductions: BambooHR makes introductions easy with resources like customizable new-hire packets and get-to-know-you emails.
  • Electronic signatures: New employees can sign the stuff they need to without stepping a foot in the office.

BambooHR also has capabilities for:

  • Attendance tracking
  • Benefits administration
  • Compliance
  • Employee communication tools
  • Employee engagement
  • Reporting and analytics
  • Payroll
  • Performance appraisal
  • Time tracking
  • Workforce management
  • Compensation management
  • Performance management tools and surveys

BambooHR Key Integrations

BambooHR has an API with lots of partnerships and an app marketplace, although these are only available from the Advantage onwards. If you do go with that plan, the platform integrates with most applicant tracking systems, as well as solutions for employee assessments, background checks, employment verification, payroll, benefits administration, ERP & accounting, training, onboarding, performance management, recognition, and more. Their marketplace keeps growing and already features a few hundred vendor integrations.

BambooHR Pricing

BambooHR uses per-employee, per-month pricing, varying by company size: companies with 26+ employees pay per-employee, while those with 25 or fewer pay a flat monthly rate (starting at $250).

Three plans are offered:

  • Core: $10/employee/month
  • Pro: $17/employee/month (Includes Core + more)
  • Elite: $25/employee/month (Includes Pro + advanced features, training, and AI assistant)

Add-ons include Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time Tracking, and Employer of Record. Bundling Payroll and Benefits Administration saves 15% (U.S. employees only). Volume and non-profit discounts are available.

BambooHR is Best For

BambooHR is a good fit for companies looking for a very customizable HR product, with pricing that reflects their needs. It’s also popular among teams that are partially or even fully remote.

How has BambooHR Changed Over Time?

BambooHR’s latest product enhancements reflect a continued push toward mobile accessibility, simplified task management, and greater workflow flexibility. These enhancements are unlikely to change how users perceive the platform overall, but they do reinforce BambooHR’s value as a system geared toward SMBs looking for pragmatic, incremental improvements in hiring efficiency.

Key feature changes include:

  • Hiring widget in Android mobile app: Recruiters using Android devices can now monitor new applicants directly from their home screen and access the candidate list with one tap. This should improve responsiveness for hiring managers or recruiters working in the field or away from a desktop.
  • Updated import tasks modal: BambooHR has introduced a redesigned interface for importing tasks, intended to streamline checklist creation during onboarding and offboarding. With this UI enhancement, admins can manage multiple hires at once or coordinate cross-departmental workflows.
  • Support for up to 15 job pipeline stages: The previous 10-stage cap has been raised to 15, allowing for more granular hiring workflows. This is useful for teams that want to separate screening, interviews, assessments, and approvals into distinct stages without relying on workaround labels or notes.

BambooHR Implementation

Getting started with BambooHR is as easy as signing up for their free trial and then getting in touch with their team. They'll likely want to talk to you about choosing a plan that's based on your needs, and the implementation of that will vary accordingly.

BambooHR Customer Success

BambooHR does more of a self-service approach to customer success. The Essentials package includes email support and access to their Customer Success Webinar library. For their telephone support, you’d have to upgrade to the Advantage plan. From our understanding, both kinds of personal support are only offered in US business hours.

About BambooHR

BambooHR was started in 2008 by Ben Peterson and Ryan Sanders. Their goal was to create a product that customers would love using and that would save countless man hours. At the same time, they wanted the company behind this product to be a place people would enjoy working at.

This approach worked, as they have kept growing both their employee and customer count quite steadily over the years. They had 470 employees around the end of 2019. Now, as of Summer 2025, they have over 1730. Their product is used by thousands of companies in well over 100 countries.

An interesting bit about the way they manage their company is that they have an “anti-workaholic policy”. Basically, BambooHR employees are forbidden from laboring over 40 hours per week.

Also noteworthy is the fact that while both founding members are still on the board, BambooHR’s CEO is now Brad Rencher. He was previously a marketing executive at Adobe Inc., before being recruited for the post in October 2019.

FAQ

How come BambooHR is so popular?

We’d argue that BambooHR was one of the first companies to bring HR functionalities to the SaaS realm with modern UX design. However, while many companies do that now, they’ve secured their position as a household name in HR software due to their ever-growing features and flexible packages; which suit SMBs and enterprises alike.

Is BambooHR Free?

As of summer 2025, BambooHR doesn’t offer a stand-alone free-for-life product. They do have a free trial, however, and they’ve been known to extend it based on your needs and plans. That being said, it does eventually cost, but the pricing is completely customized based on what features you need.
