Greenhouse is one of the leading applicant tracking and recruiting software ideal for medium and large-sized companies. It allows you to:
- Share jobs across hundreds of job boards
- Encourage existing employees to refer candidates through dedicated referral programs
- Customize and automate applicant tracking pipelines
- Track and optimize your sourcing strategy with data-driven reports.
We like that Greenhouse takes diversity hiring into consideration with measures to reduce unconscious bias. The platform primes interviewers with reminders during key moments in the hiring process. These reminders are intended to keep the evaluation process focused on empirical qualifications and nothing else. Users can also require the interview panel to explain and justify their ratings to promote transparency and fairness.
To see the hiring process through to the finish line, Greenhouse’s onboarding module equips users with customization and automation features. Offer letters can be personalized and then sent out automatically. The software also makes it easier for you to prepare a thoughtful welcome for the new hires to get them familiar with the company’s culture and colleagues.
Greenhouse is a solid ATS that will provide excellent value to medium and large companies. For the most part, it succeeds in its attempt to drive engaging candidate interactions and streamline administrative tasks. Some potential customers will be turned off by their lack of transparent pricing, but for those who can afford it and will use all of its features, we highly recommend this platform.

We do not currently use Greenhouse as we switched to Jazz. If the opportunity presents itself for us to use Greenhouse again, we would use it for all TA processes including sourcing, interviewing logistics like scheduling and gathering notes and scores, managing a talent pool, and more.
It also has analytics functions so you can download reports quickly and share them with stakeholders.
I appreciated that the dashboard was easy to use. You could quickly find the job you were interviewing for or the candidates you wanted to see. The reports were easy to generate and download for sharing. I also liked the ability to track notes and scores for each interview, and it would provide average scores.
We used Greenhouse for our talent acquisition processes. We are responsible for our internal recruiting operations. We used it for two years before switching to JazzHR to save budget. Greenhouse was a much more efficient system.
When we used it, we found the dashboard very intuitive and appreciated that hiring managers and interviewers could log in, see the status, record notes, and download resumes in one easy to access place.
At the time, there wasn't the functionality to send reminders to interviewers to complete their scoring and notes. We had to do this offline. I also found the resume upload sometimes hard to find within the candidate profile. I wish we could customize the platform more.
Greenhouse is much more intuitive and efficient than JazzHR, for example. I would say Rippling has better functionality because you can customize almost everything, and it is web based, which is convenient for everyone.
Cost is really important. Since we used it, I know the cost has gone up, and as a small company it became outside of our budget. Especially since it is not a full HRIS. I would rather spend that budget on a complete HR system. I also think Greenhouse needs an improved mobile app.
I'm not sure about this one as we moved over to JazzHR.
Large companies with high-volume recruiting needs will find Greenhouse a great fit.
Small companies with a low budget and low recruitment needs do not need Greenhouse.
I use Greenhouse daily. It is the hub of my work. I use it to post jobs, review applicants, communicate with candidates, share info with hiring managers, and to gather data. We also use it to develop a systemic approach to hiring.
We develop scorecards, competencies, and even set up internal approvals. We use it to publish jobs across many portals, including our careers page and other job boards.
- I enjoy the ease of managing candidates on Greenhouse. I can get a visual at any time as to the hiring stage of each role.
- I enjoy the data the system produces, such as time to hire, candidate sources, and offer acceptance rates.
- I enjoy being able to share hiring information with the hiring manager because, at a glance, they can see the interview scorecards of the panelists, structured feedback, and the interview documents.
We were struggling to maintain the applicant tracking system and the employee files. We chose Greenhouse for its ease of use, setup, and learning, as well as its intuitive platform and price.
The system also helps us maintain the integrity of our document management and always be prepared for an audit. We have used it for about 5 years and really taken pride in building it out to our specifications. It is an easy tool to use.
- Greenhouse is sometimes clunky to use. It is only an applicant tracking system and does not have a CRM function, so I can't nurture passive or past candidates.
- Setting up this system requires deliberate care. It is time-consuming, and users such as hiring managers have to be trained on how to use it. However, it will pay off if you do.
- Greenhouse is for structured, specific recruitment of individual positions. It is not meant for mass recruiting and filling a funnel.
I love the structured hiring process. If set up properly, Greenhouse can do the work for you. This tool also stands out in the analytics it can provide, deepening recruitment process reporting and feeding leadership decisions. The entire pipeline is visible, which is vital for the hiring manager and assigned recruiters.
Key criteria include the ability to track hiring volume and the hiring process. Some tools are good for high-volume hiring, while Greenhouse is better suited for structured professional hiring.
The system's ease of use and its adoption by hiring managers in the organization also matter. Corporate buy-in on the product is important, or else it will make recruiting an arduous task.
Greenhouse continues to evolve over the years, being responsive to the needs of their customers. It has evolved into a more comprehensive hiring platform. The platform has expanded to include stronger analytics, reports, and automation tools, which improve efficiency.
Greenhouse is great for midsized companies that hire for professional, technical, or leadership roles. It is a fit for organizations that want a data-driven approach to hiring. Companies with dedicated recruitment staff find this tool useful.
Greenhouse would not be helpful for small startups with evolving recruitment needs or minimal hiring needs, as it will not be able to produce reliable data or build out its systems. It is also not the best fit for high-volume organizations.
I use Greenhouse daily as the primary applicant tracking system for the organization. It supports end-to-end applicant workflows, from job creation and posting to candidate evaluation and hiring decisions.
- Greenhouse is highly configurable and allows teams to tailor workflows to their specific hiring processes.
- The platform offers an extensive library of native integrations with leading cloud-based tools.
- The company consistently releases thoughtful product updates that reflect input from experienced talent professionals.
As the Director of Talent Acquisition for Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, I selected Greenhouse to address the need for a highly configurable applicant tracking system that could integrate smoothly with our existing technical stack.
One of the primary challenges we aimed to solve was managing complex hiring workflows without relying heavily on engineering support. Greenhouse integrated seamlessly with tools like Calendly for self-scheduling and supported SSO through Okta, which aligned with our security requirements.
The platform is GDPR compliant, which was critical for supporting international hiring across the UK and EU. The system’s workflows aligned well with our WHO hiring process and offered BI capabilities that allowed real-time reporting on key hiring metrics.
From a budget perspective, Greenhouse was within our price range and more cost-effective than Lever. The RFP and sales process was also more efficient and transparent compared to other vendors we evaluated.
- Access to the most advanced customization features requires purchasing the highest-tier package.
- Due to GDPR compliance, candidate and job data is segmented, which makes holistic reporting more complex without additional tools.
- The frequent product updates require close coordination with a customer success representative to stay current on changes.
Greenhouse is intuitive and can be configured without significant engineering involvement. The workflow automation tools allow customization down to the individual user level, which helps drive adoption among hiring managers and leaders.
Compared to similar systems, implementation feels more approachable and structured. The training and enablement library is extensive and supports both administrators and end users effectively.
Cost should be evaluated beyond licensing and annual fees, including expenses related to integrations, configuration, and specialized modules.
Another factor to consider is whether external expertise will be required to implement and manage the system, based on your team’s technical capacity. Compatibility with the existing technical stack is critical to avoid manual processes and inefficiencies.
Customer service quality should be assessed early, including access to support contacts, training resources, and response timelines.
Greenhouse has continued to evolve by improving system accessibility and updating interfaces to align with ADA standards. The organization consistently invests in refining usability for a broader range of users.
They are intentional about developing and maintaining customized APIs with leading applications. These updates reflect a clear focus on long-term scalability and system interoperability.
Greenhouse is well-suited for mid-sized, tech-forward organizations with structured hiring processes. It works best for teams that have baseline technical proficiency with cloud-based platforms.
Organizations that can dedicate a systems administrator benefit the most from its configuration depth. It supports teams that require flexibility, automation, and detailed reporting.
This tool is not a good fit for organizations without a dedicated systems administrator who can manage configuration and ongoing optimization. It may be excessive for teams with low hiring volume or very simple recruitment needs.
Organizations seeking a plug-and-play solution with minimal setup may find the system too complex for their requirements.

Greenhouse has rolled out a series of updates in April and May 2025 aimed at enhancing user efficiency, improving data governance, and enhancing the overall candidate experience. These enhancements focus on giving recruiters more control through self-serve features, reducing scheduling friction, and ensuring more inclusive and streamlined workflows for both administrators and interviewers.
Key recent changes include:
- New filtering options on the My Interviews page
Interviewers can now filter by Timeframe, Candidate Name, and Job Title, making it easier to prepare for upcoming interviews and navigate busy schedules. - Bulk editing for departments and offices
Admins can now rename, archive, or reassign offices and departments without involving support — a major usability upgrade for distributed teams with evolving org structures. - Improved Data Protection configuration
Admins gained more flexibility to preview and manage custom terms of service and privacy policies, reinforcing compliance for GDPR and global hiring environments. - Enhancements to interview scheduling UX
Updates include a simplified time zone picker and a more intuitive display of candidate availability, making it easier for coordinators to avoid back-and-forth. - Pronoun visibility and inclusive messaging updates
Greenhouse made incremental updates to show pronouns in more areas of the app and adjusted default messaging for better inclusivity.
Greenhouse was founded in 2012 by Daniel Chait. Chait had previously founded a banking software startup, Lab49, and while managing it, he experienced first-hand the challenges of recruiting and realized the need for software to streamline it. After he sold his stake in Lab49 in 2011, he decided to focus his next business venture on recruiting tech, and Greenhouse was born.
Greenhouse supports over 6,500 customers today and has expanded beyond their New York HQ to have offices in San Francisco, Denver, and Dublin. The company has also won several awards over the last few years, including Inc. Magazine Best Workplace (2018 – 2022) and Glassdoor #1 Best Place to Work, Forbes Cloud 100, Deloitte Technology Fast 500, Inc. 5000, Crain's Best Places to Work NYC, and Mogul’s Top 100 Workplaces for Diverse Representation (2022).
