We like that Oyster’s pricing is transparent, which is remarkable in an industry that often saves sticker shock for demos/sales calls. Since I worked between both teams, I spent 50% of my time using features aligned with TA's needs and the other 50% using features aligned with HR's needs. I worked full-time and used the platform daily, Monday through Friday. I assisted recruiters and talent acquisition partners in sourcing candidates to fill vacant roles across the company.

When I worked with the HR team, we used Oyster to hire employees, onboard contractors, transfer personnel between teams, and, if applicable, convert them to different job profiles. By conversion, I mean changing someone to a W2 employee after they had been hired as a 1099 contractor.

What do you like about Oyster?

Personally, Oyster is one of the better platforms. I appreciate how it emphasizes the importance of compliance. Since we were a global company, Oyster's functions allowed us to stay compliant with city laws, state laws, and federal regulations. Its onboarding functions are excellent.

Onboarding can often become messy with global companies, but Oyster streamlined the process. When it came to customer support, we felt confident because their team was easy to contact and provided helpful tools and resources.

Why did your organization buy Oyster, and how long have you used it for?

I was with my previous employer for a 9-month temporary contract. We used Oyster as a "catch-all" platform for Human Resources and Talent Acquisition. The platform allowed us to source, onboard, and maintain personnel records.

While I was on that contract, I worked between both teams, which gave me a good grasp of the platform's functions, and I enjoyed using it. From my understanding, they implemented Oyster shortly before I joined because of a company shift that required HR and TA to work more collaboratively.

What do you dislike about Oyster?

I don’t have many cons, but there are a few. Their reporting functions are not the best; for a platform that is so advanced, the reporting features are basic and require more manual work.

Additionally, the reliance on third-party services, which many companies use, can sometimes cause issues. When working with third-party vendors, processes can become messy and more time-consuming than necessary.

How is Oyster different than their competitors?

I have worked with similar tools in the past, and I can confidently say that I prefer Oyster. The platform operates efficiently and simplifies tasks for HR and TA functions. Its features are user-friendly and make our roles easier.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Companies and teams should assess whether they truly need this type of platform—just because it offers a lot doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for everyone. Since it is somewhat expensive, I would advise teams to carefully evaluate their needs before committing to a platform like Oyster.

How has Oyster changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

Oyster did not change significantly during my time using it. It remained consistent throughout my contract role. However, due to the platform’s modern features and design, I felt it didn’t require much change.

I use Oyster monthly. We hire on a month-to-month basis. It is used to align my company's practices with the entire office team when hiring. Having information on salary requirements for other areas of the world is a tool used almost every time. My team also uses it for the cost calculator when considering hiring an applicant. Having the compliance tools offered is a standout feature of this program.

What do you like about Oyster?

I like the compliance laws offered between countries. The platform setup is easy to navigate. Oyster has great tools for new employees to learn how to use the software. Hiring remote workers anywhere in the world is a wonderful tool.

Why did your organization buy Oyster, and how long have you used it for?

We spent a lot of time hiring employees outside of the USA and had to contact our law team to ensure laws from every country were being handled correctly. We were using three different programs that were time-consuming and hard to teach new staff members to use. We purchased Oyster to streamline our processes onto one platform. As a large company that hires worldwide, Oyster allowed us to set up employee information efficiently. An easy onboarding and hiring process was a key reason for purchasing this program.

What do you dislike about Oyster?

Customer service can be complex sometimes. Getting an agent is time-consuming. The initial onboarding emails can be confusing at times. The rising cost is a con as well.

How is Oyster different than their competitors?

Having used a few programs, I can say that Oyster's laws and requirements are easily accessible, which is a step up from competitors. I prefer this program over a few different ones I have used.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

They need to consider what their onboarding process consists of and if the program is a good fit. They also need to consider what compliances they have versus other countries' requirements. I feel that a prospective purchaser needs to meet with the sales team to ensure Oyster will be a successful tool.

Oyster has improved the smoothness of learning the program. They have also kept up with day-to-day changes in laws and requirements.

As an HR consultant, I used Oyster HR to manage several key workflows for our organization. Primarily, I utilized the platform to handle the end-to-end hiring process for our international employees, from posting job openings to onboarding new hires. Oyster simplified compliance and guaranteed that all our contracts and employment practices followed local labor law regulations, which was brilliant and would have been too complicated for us to manage. I also oversaw payroll management, ensuring that all our remote employees were paid accurately and on time, and handled complaints and inquiries. Additionally, the platform helped us administer localized benefits. Oyster streamlined many of our HR processes.

What do you like about Oyster?

The interface was intuitive, so even employees who were not tech-savvy could use it. There is a built-in time zone coordination feature, which is perfect for international team alignment. It made scheduling easy. Customer service was exemplary. I think they probably had 24/7 people on call because we never had to wait "till tomorrow" for a reply.

Why did your organization buy Oyster, and how long have you used it for?

We set up an account with Oyster about four years ago and used it for about two years. We were expanding rapidly and needed a workforce from countries with lower salary rates to be more economically efficient. We did not want to go through the hassle of setting up entities in different countries, and our HR team did not feel confident we could do it in-house and remain compliant. So, we outsourced this service. The platform's ability to handle international payroll has been a game changer.

What do you dislike about Oyster?

Cost. We dropped it because of the cost; it simply made no sense for us to use such a pricey platform. If the company had been developing as fast as we hoped, we might have stayed with them, but not under the circumstances we had. There were also some limitations with the integrations, and we could not lose some of the other platforms we were using for other aspects of people management. I also would have liked to see more customization; the system was rather robust and did not allow finesse.

How is Oyster different than their competitors?

Oyster stood out from its competitors mainly because of its top-notch compliance management across countries, which was a game changer for us. Many other tools don't cover this as thoroughly. I also found Oyster's interface incredibly user-friendly, which isn't something I can say about all the HR platforms I've tried—some of them feel like navigating a spaceship. One special thing I really appreciated is how it helps with time zone coordination; it's a small detail, but it makes scheduling across a global team much easier.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Other than the compliance aspect, look for a user-friendly interface that makes daily operations smooth and straightforward. It is important to evaluate the integration capabilities with your existing HR systems to avoid tech compatibility issues. Lastly, consider the quality of customer support, as having reliable, real-time assistance can save you a lot of trouble down the line and is a reason clients would walk away.

Initially, Oyster was mainly about helping companies hire and stay compliant with local laws globally. Over time, they added stronger payroll management features, making it easier to pay employees accurately and on time, which goes hand in hand with the first service. They also kept working on the interface and the integrations.
