Spring Health Review

Spring Health is a mental healthcare platform that provides members quick and easy access to a range of mental health solutions irrespective of where they lie on the spectrum.

To get started, all users must complete a clinically-validated mental health assessment and provide information such as their age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, profession, symptoms, family history, etc. Spring Health's Precision Mental Healthcare technology will then screen them for 10+ mental health conditions and use Machine Learning models to compare the input data against the thousands of data points available in their system. Once this process is completed, you will be assigned a personalized care plan.

Every individual's care plan may include one or more of the following: resources for self-guided care, quick mental exercises based on CBT techniques, behavioral coaching, therapy sessions, self-guided therapy, and medication. You will also be assigned a Care Navigator who is responsible for providing support in whatever way possible throughout your journey to better mental health.

According to research conducted by Spring Health, this approach means 2x higher recovery rates and 8 weeks faster recovery as compared to traditional mental healthcare.

What’s nice to note about Spring Health is that they have a great network of licensed therapists and mental health practitioners who go through a rigorous 7-step vetting process before being onboarded.

What users think of Spring Health

Reviewer's Rating
10/10

I have personally used Spring Health during recent life changes as a sounding board, to gain tools and feedback to assist in moving forward. It has integrated easily into my personal and professional life, with access available through my mobile device at any time.

I was able to review multiple providers listed on their website based on my needs. Each provider has a detailed bio, which simplifies the selection process. The most important aspect for me was that, even though Spring Health is a work benefit, it is confidential, and private sessions (HIPAA-compliant) are held at my convenience.

What do you like about this tool?

Spring Health is free to employees as part of the employer’s benefits package. The employer works out the cost directly with Spring Health (e.g., Spring Works for Employers), which allows the plan to meet the employer’s specific needs.

Employees can expect to pay an average of $2,100 per year after the designated number of free sessions, which supports easy budgeting. This allows the employee to build a relationship with the provider before any payment is required.

Why did your organization buy this tool, and how long have you used it for?

Spring Health presented an opportunity for the organization to allow its employees to obtain mental health support related to stress, anxiety, burnout, anger management, and life changes, to name a few, which they may not otherwise have access to in their personal lives. It also provides a key benefit as part of joining and staying with the organization.

After using it for almost two years, the benefits have been substantial. The appeal was the diverse provider options, easy access to care, and the commitment by our human resources department to hold quarterly sessions with a Spring Health guest to discuss prevalent societal topics in more detail. This has helped improve employees’ reported burnout rates and their work-life balance.

What do you dislike about this tool?

Spring Health can appear overly corporate when reviewing their website and offerings, and it can be difficult to navigate if you're unfamiliar with the platform. Small- to medium-sized businesses may prefer a more local approach, finding benefits through community services due to cost considerations and a more personalized focus.

Providers are nationally based, meaning a selected provider could be located in a different state, which may feel impersonal to some clients. The varying costs of providers may leave clients without continued access after the free sessions end, despite established rapport and progress.

How is this tool different than their competitors?

Spring Health is a well-known, well-vetted service. The ease, affordability, and accessibility for clients—both employees and employers—are strong advantages. When dealing with mental health services, selecting a platform that has refined both partnership and client access is a smart choice.

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

The three “A’s” are a useful measure when considering a tool like Spring Health: Accessibility, Affordability, and Accountability. Spring Health brings each of these to the table for both the employer and the employee.

Organizations should assess the specific needs of their workforce. For example, the healthcare and legal industries experience high stress and burnout rates, making accessible and affordable services critical for retention and employee satisfaction.

How has this tool changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

Spring Health was founded in 2016, making it a relatively new organization, and in just four years, it was valued at $2 billion for its contributions to the mental health industry. This growth suggests the company has listened to its clients, monitored industry standards, and adapted to meet changing demands.

It demonstrates a commitment to providing services that support both employers and employees. This has contributed to improved employee retention and work-life balance.

What specific type of user or organization is this tool very good for?

Businesses with more than 15 employees, to justify the cost of the partnership, would be a good fit. It is recommended that any organization contact Spring Health to confirm current plans and pricing before committing.

What specific type of user or organization would this tool not be a good fit for?

Spring Health can be applied in any industry, as it provides mental health support services without restriction. There are no limitations on who can benefit from these services.

Reviewer's Rating
8/10

We used Spring Health as an extension of our health benefits, providing it to employees who expressed mental health concerns. It made therapy more accessible, allowing employees to get ongoing or single-session therapy.

Spring Health connected users with a care coordinator to match them with suitable therapists, though employees could also search the database themselves. Their matching process was generally effective, and if a match didn't work, they would promptly find a new one. As an HR professional, I could see usage data without violating HIPAA laws.

What do you like about this tool?

It made therapy more accessible, with over 20% of employees using the platform in the first year. Spring Health focused on therapy, ensuring no one felt excluded from accessing care. Their employees and support teams were helpful in getting us up and running quickly.

Why did your organization buy this tool, and how long have you used it for?

We shifted from fully-insured to level-funded insurance, which allowed us to see more detailed benefits data, revealing a significant number of employees using medication for mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Recognizing the difficulty in finding mental health services through traditional health insurance, we sought a solution to better support our employees. Spring Health's team impressed us with their supportive approach and focus on mental health.

We used the tool for two years until our company was acquired and we had to switch to the new company's platform.

What do you dislike about this tool?

Being focused only on therapy can be limiting, as sometimes employees want broader support. Sorting therapists by intersectional identifiers, such as finding a female person of color, was challenging at the time. In certain areas of the US, it was harder to find available therapists.

How is this tool different than their competitors?

Spring Health specializes in therapy and provides strong access to therapists, unlike other tools that may also include coaches. It functions as a superior version of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

What Instructions should people think about when buying this type of tool?

Consider the costs associated with depression and anxiety and how much productivity is lost. Can a tool like this offset some of those costs? Will this tool provide services that are sometimes expected from managers and HR, who are not licensed therapists? Will access to therapy increase employee engagement? Do competitors offer similar benefits or perks?

How has this tool changed or evolved over time to meet users needs?

They have grown their network of therapists and started working with insurance. It's great to see them becoming more common as a benefit.

What specific type of user or organization is this tool very good for?

Spring Health can be a great fit for any organization looking to support their employees, especially in current times.

What specific type of user or organization would this tool not be a good fit for?

Spring Health’s cost might be prohibitive for smaller organizations.
